The story line is simple. A wealthy aristocrat joins the military in Hungary early in the 20th century. Military discipline and honor are part of his soul. His closest friend is also in the military but is poor, artistic, and jealous. The book concerns the thoughts and emotions of the General as he prepares for the first visit by his artistic friend in 40 years. During the meeting the friends discuss why they separated so long ago. The causes of the breach involve a woman and a dishonorable act While the plot is thin, the narrative is rich in thought and emotional detail. I recommend it.

It was long time now since I read a good book that catched my heart like this, again.
But the author really dissapointed me! at the end...

A book that is basically a conversation between two people....really only one does most of the talking...and the questions aren't answered in the end.

Beautiful writing, short book. Interesting meditation on friendship, love, betrayal, aging and the meaning of life. Not much else going on here. The entire book is a monologue by one character. Aside from the book's better qualities which I've mentioned, there is just not much else going on here so I can't really give it more than a tepid recommendation.

Merci Hiddo.

I tried to read this book twice - at first I thought it would lead to the genius of Marquez - but found it to be increasingly boring and cumbersome to read. Never finished it both times!

Long and deliberate explanations, and the attention to each signifficant detail make this book a pleasure to read, for those who appreciate these qualities. The author takes his time telling the story, so the reader should not be impatient, but enjoy the meticulously set background, and intrically woven immages to illustrate a story, that itself could be told in a few sentences.
