- Povoa and Medeas reservoir is located near Nisa village in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal: for carp and barbel fishing, use white and red maggots mixed into light bait balls laced with almond extract. This is an effective, traditional bait enhancer that’s been used by Portuguese fishermen over centuries. Directions: north, road 18 from Portalegre to Alpalhão, then east, road 246. Exit north for the lake on local roads.
- The Serra da Estrela is translated as mountains of the stars and it’s located to the west of Castelo Branco in the elevated region of Beira Interior Sul in north central Portugal: contained in all the waters here, but especially the smaller streams, called ribeiras you will stand a fine chance of catching wild brown trout in a virgin environment. Although not the biggest fish the quantity of catches always surprises visitors. I recommend using one or two weighted nymph fly lures handling a short rod (7-8 feet) with a number 2 or 3 line and a 1m leader, monofilament line acts as a hook length. Directions: take the IP3 main road to Penacova (east of Coimbra) continuing to Góis via Vila Nova de Poiares.
- Algarve coast in southern Portugal: beach casting is the way to catch sea bass. Visit on an overcast day at sunrise or dusk and cast to a spot just before where the waves break. Favourite local baits are shellfish and pork fat. Casting from the beach at Tavira will land you sole, conger eel and shad as well as bass.
