Olivia F wrote this review 11 days ago. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No“Millicent Min is, basically, a genius. She could solve complex equations in kindergarten, recite the presidents in several different orders at age two, and is a senior in high school and taking summer college courses at age eleven. Her best friend is her Grandmother, as none of her peers have ever really liked her.
Although, in this particular summer, Millicent is perfectly content with her poetry studies at a local community college, her Mom insists that she join volleyball and tutor a student who she despises. At first, things look miserable and bleak - but then, she meets her first friend at volleyball, Emily.
At first, it was really annoying. The way that she spoke came across as kind of arrogant. And, when she talked about not having friends, I kind of wanted to strangle her - if you walk into volleyball practice and not expect to play, but think you'll be going over the history and measuring the trajectory of the ball...I mean, seriously. At first, it was as though she had no actual feelings outside of school - it was so difficult to relate to her.
Then, when she made friends with Emily, things got to be a little better. I guess she became more lovable when she wasn't talking about being a genius and nothing but being a genius. So, basically, I like the book more than I did at first. It still gives me a few *facepalm* moments, but it definitely gets better. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would!
