“The main character has given up her career as a lawyer for ethical reasons. When her father asks her to help him defend a woman that is accused of murdering her husband, she wrestles with her decision, but agrees to help. I was hooked through most of the book from this point and loved the suspense throughout, but the end was disappointing. ”

“Wilhelm has a polished way of expressing "tension". There are more unresolved threads in this story than usual for Wilhelm- who specializes in keeping you turning the pages..... The protagonist is an attorney, Barbara Holloway. When her mother passed away years ago, Barbara left for Phoenix AZ. After Barb returns to see her dad, a retired lawyer, you begin to sense the way she starts to enjoy his company. There was definitely a missing element in her life. He asks her to help defend a local woman who is suspected of murder... after meeting Nell, the defendant, she agrees & then the tension starts to build...”

But it took a really really long time to reveal its central mystery and then when it did, it fell really flat. The ending was terrible, unnecessarily tragic and really disappointing and unresolved. ”

However, it was very difficult to comprehend some of the main parts of the book. Fractuals and chaos theory and other esoteric mathematical concepts are not generally items I enjoy or understand. The ending leaves too many questions.”

Too many red herrings with big red arrows pointed at them. Enjoyable characters, though. Especially Bobby and her father. Will try others from the series.”

I finally finished it. What a good story. I can see Kate Wilhelm's love of science fiction in this story.
Unanswered questions: Where is Mike? What will happen to the kids?”
