Essays and interviews with Hooks, a black woman who observes and thinks critically about race, gender and cultural politics in America. She notices the yearnings of people across cultures--we all seem to be yearning to be free in however many ways we find ourselves unfree. She illuminates situations troubling to blacks that go unremarked by whites culturally blind to certain injustices. Excellent bibliography.
