“I didn't get too far into this novel. There seems to be a lot in this genre produced from the mid-90s until about 3 or 4 years ago. The genre? Eastern European Bukowskiite romps. Drug-addict ramblings, bus, tram or subway rides through the ugly peripheries searching for a score or money to get a score, vulgar humor that is a bit clicheed, lukewarm anti-intellectual rage, self-aware trashiness. It seems effortless and it's just not funny enough to waste my time reading too far into this. Stasiuk's "Nine" is a better version of this genre. Sorokin's "Ice" is perhaps just as bad. "Border States" is worse (no drugs or sex, not even trashy eroticism as respite). ”
