I sort of liked Julie of the Wolves but it was really hard to understand. There were some parts that were really boring but other parts were exciting... For about three pages. : (

Do you love adventure and animals? Then Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George is for you.

Julie or Miyax was lost on the Alaskan tundra. The wind burned her face. She examined the wolf pack below her. The pups were wrestling and their elders were bringing in caribou carcass. Julie had been without food for days, and she was starving! She crawled on all fours down the hill and approached the playing pups. Jell-O was watching her closely, gave her lots of caution. She didn’t want to approach the pack because they could severally hurt her, but this was her only choice. She day dreamed about the little pink room in San Francisco, Amy, her pen pal, had talked about .The golden gate bridge glistening in the sun. Julie knew she had to get there somehow. How will she survive? Will she ever get to San Francisco?

Julie of the Wolves is a 170 paged novel by Jean Craighead George. This book contains a few black and white pictures that were illustrated by John Shoenherr. Julie of the Wolves is mainly about an Eskimo girl who's name is Julie. Julie's dad disappeared one day, and she was left in the care of her aunt, and was to be married to a boy named Daniel. Instead of pursuing marriage to Daniel, Julie runs away and lives in the wild amongst a pack of wolves. Julie learns the way of the wolves, and lives in the wild until she makes her way to San Francisco. This fiction novel is an exciting adventure book and is recommended for kids ages 10 & up.

Although I've wanted to read this for years, I was not enthralled by the story. I'm sure it's captivating for some audiences, but it just didn't grab me as I'd hoped.

Miyax (Julie to some) was only 13 and running away from the life in Barrow, where she'd been married to a slow-witted boy (in name only, though) and was extremely unhappy. Years ago, she'd spent much time on the tundra hunting, living with her father, learning the ways of the wild things, until an aunt had come for her and made her enter school. Now, she used the knowledge her father had given her before he'd disappeared, embracing the old Eskimo ways as she tried to make her way to civilization. She was heading toward San Francisco to live with a pen pal who'd invited her. Miyax watched a pack of wolves near her, found out their various signals and moves with one another, and after time became able to get food from them, saving her life. Using the stars and other natural signs, she continued moving toward the coast until one day the actions of gussaks (white men) changed her mind, making her realize that living here in the wilderness was better than being among those new ways.

The bravery shown in this story was remarkable, but I just couldn't get wrapped up in it. But I did finish the book - it wasn't large at all.
