  • Charlotte: Our protagonist, a prostitute abandoned by her parents and raised in an orphanage until she ran away to Copenhagen when she was 16 years old.
  • Fru Schleswig: Charlotte's sidekick frequently mistaken for Charlotte's mother. She was the cook for the orphanage that Charlotte was raised in and when she ran away Fru Schleswig accompanied her.
  • Herr Møller: Østerbro baker frequented by Charlotte. She will occasionally trade sex for baked goods.
  • Fru Emilie Kwak: Wealthy Østerbro widow who is looking for a maid to clean her mansion top to bottom; therefore Charlotte recommends Fru Schleswig for the position.
  • Professor Frederik Kwak: Fru Kwak's husband who have recently disappears and believed by some to be a ghost.

  • Number Nine Rosenvængets Allé: Fru Krak's "sombre homestead set back some distance from the road, surrounded by tall conifer trees of an exceedingly dark green that gave it an air of shadow & menace."
  • Oblivion Room: Secret basement room at Number Nine Rosenvængets Allé, which contains the strangest contraption that Charlotte has ever seen. It took up a quarter of the floor space of the Oblivion Room and contained a door of dark leather and wood in its center.
