I loved Snow Falling on Cedars by this same author and so I decided to give East of the Mountains a try. His style always includes such finite details and real, human emotion that can be related to, particularly by someone familiar with rural life. The plot is a little slow but I enjoy savoring the moments of this book.

This was a pretty good book. His other book, Snow Falling on Cedars was better.

I tried reading Snow Falling on Cedars by the same author. If I ever need to start taking sleeping pills this could replace the medication. OMG that book was so boring. This one, however, East of the Mountains, was a very quiet but poignant novel. Very reminiscent of Neville Shute's stories of which I was very fond. It's a tale of a elderly doctor from Seattle who is terminally ill. He decides to set out on his final road trip with his two dogs. He has every intention of not returning home. He has some interesting experiences and meets some characters along the way. It reminded me of the movie "The World's Fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins. I have spent a bit of time in the area that is the setting for the book and this also makes it a good read.

I liked this and I think part of the like is regional. I have roamed/hiked in many of the places discussed. It may not have as much appeal to a non Pacific Northwesterner. Have to be in the mood to read a book about dying as well.

A man's desire to control his own death in the face of cancer. A moving argument about assisted suicide.

I loved this book. Part of my absolute pleasure in reading the novel was immersing myself in Guterson's masterful style once again. The other, of course, was the mythically woven story of Ben Givens's journey to find himself again. One of the best books I've read in a while.

A great novel that takes on in many ways the meaning of life and what makes life meaningful.

Beautiful, special book. I cared about Ben from the first page, his dogs, his travels. This story was so readable, and I won't forget it.

Fresh from reading "Snow falling On Cedars" I thought it was not as good, but I reread it a couple of years later, and found so much more to like about it.
