Yi-feng Chang comes from China just after WW2, and is anchored in this country by his profession and family, by a new name, by a new language. Over a lifetime, he gets to experience all of it, everything that could be possibly covered by the word "American". As always, it's the outsider who really delineates the character of a country.”

The sentence construction at times seemed clumsy, but felt an authentic way for someone not speaking their birth language. I liked the occasional use of large unusual words that made me almost interrupt reading to search out a dictionary. The story line was very absorbing. ”
