For understanding Socrates and his philosophy, here's required reading. Although lately I have come to regard this book as a fictional treatment (in genre fiction we call it Didactic Fiction) of Plato's philosophy as phrased by Socrates. I don't lose sleep over whether the ideas initially came from Socrates or Plato though.

What matters is the full treatment of Socrates' Ideal society. Bloom's translation reads very easily and it makes the work even that much more accessible.

The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.

Very interesting, he never actually defines what justice is. Although that might have been Plato's point. His hypothetical city is raises an interesting question. Can politics and philosophy truly coexist together?

I don't exactly know how to review this. It's politics, ethics, drama, philosophy, thinly veiled craziness. It's epic and underlies and a lot of modern political thought. Don't hate.
