I loved studying The Republic, but it's hard, even to reread it, on a hammock with a pina colada...

Bloom membuat terjemahan harfiah, begitu janji beliau.

This is one of the basic books in the history of philosophy. I always dreamed of becoming a philosopher-king. It didn't exactly work out that way, but it was a great ideal to have while passing through life. So many of Plato's fundamental ideas are to be found in this long dialogue. There is much here to stimulate the imagination of how things could be.

I have read several translations of the Republic and Bloom's is undoubtedly my favorite among them. His translation is both accurate and readable. It feels natural, giving new life to an often petulantly endured classic. My family thought I was crazy when they saw I was laughing out loud reading Plato, but such is the life brought to the conversations in its pages. The absurdity of Plato's attacks is not just ample, it's funny.

This the basis of politcal theory. A must read in order to understand the idea of utopia.
