“Outside of the Bible, the most influential book I've ever read. Piper contrasts the duty-driven brand of Christian religion with the biblical connection to the life of God which overflows in eternal delight. If Christianity feels like a burden to you, Piper's message may be the tool God uses in your life to lead you to a more authentic experience of Christ.”

It's about happiness because that is what our Creator commands: "Delight yourself in the Lord" (Psalm 37:4). And it is serious because, as Jeremy Taylor said, "God threatens terrible things if we will not be happy."
Piper explains and explores the concept of Christian Hedonism - living the Christian life for and in the pleasure of God.”
“umm...WOW! This one, as it has to many others in the last 20+ years, changed the way I think about almost everything...and that's only slightly hyperbole.”

Partly because I read "When I Don't Desire God" before this. Desiring God seemed more of a defense of Christian Hedonism. I agree with Piper on his perspective on Christian Hedonism, to argue the fact it's not right to fully delight in God (which is Christian Hedonism) is shear ignorance. Christian Hedonism is full pleasure in God, in a biblical manner. Piper does a great job of explaining this. Personally I would recommend "When I Don't Desire God" if you're looking for reasons on why it's critical to fight for joy in God.”
