“Goya is in some ways the first modern artist. HIs series The Disasters of War, concerning the guerrilla war against Napoleon's invading forces, were, unfortunately, images of the world to come. I've read a number of books by Hughes and value him as one of the few public intellectuals who is accessible and sensible.”
