  • Dr. Susan Silverman: Spenser's long time girlfriend. She is a psychologist and his sounding board.
  • Vinnie Morris: The 'gun' for Gino a mobster but also a friend of Spenser's who helps him in some cases.
  • Hawk: Spenser's friend and backup. Hawk is a handsome and dangerous black man.
  • Jocelyn Colby: An actress with the Port City Theater Company, part of the cast of the play being performed when Craig Sampson, one of the actors, is shot on stage. Tall, beautiful, with amethyst eyes
  • Demetrius "Jimmy" Christopholous: Artistic Director of the Port City Theater Company, he hires Spenser (via Susan, who is on the board of the theater) to investigate a stalker
  • Craig Sampson: the Port City Theater Company actor shot during a performance of Handy Dandy
  • Lonnie Wu: Port City Chinese tong mobster, married to Rikki Wu
  • Herman Leong: Boston police detective, Quirk's "Chinatown guy"
  • Rikki Wu: member of the board of the Port City Theater Company, married to Lonnie Wu
  • Healy: Massachusetts State Police Homicide Commander
  • Kwan Chang: Chinese tong, like the mob but more so
  • Mei Ling: a Harvard student of Chinese descent, hired by Spenser as a translator
  • Eddie Lee: "Fast" Eddie Lee, head of the tong in Boston's Chinatown, big time mobster; also brother of Rikki Wu
  • DeSpain: Port City chief of police, former state cop, tough man
  • Rikki Wu: wife of Lonnie Wu, member of the Port City Theater Company board;

  • Jimmy Christopholous: "Jimmy" is the English version of "Demetri" that the Port City Theater Company Art Director likes to go by
