At an outpost in the South American jungle, conflict erupts between two misplaced outsiders--Martin Quarrier, who has undertaken a mission to convert the local Indians to his own form of Christianity, and Lewis Moon, a mercenary out to kill them.

  • Leslie Huben: Pompous leader of the missionary efforts at Mãe de Deus; determined to "civilize" and convert the Niaruna to Christianity; upon their arrival the Quarriers meet the Hubens and join forces with them to establish a new mission.
  • Andy Huben: Wife of Leslie; her represssed sexuality is awakened when she meets Lewis Moon.
  • Commandante Guzman: The local police comandante wants the Niaruna tribe to move their village so they won't be killed by gold miners moving into the area.
  • Boronai: "Civilized" Niaranu man, acting as servant to the Hubens.
  • Father Xantes: The local priest at Mãe de Deus.
