I came across this book in 1981 in a hotel library in Bangkok. I finished it the day before my stay ended -- 3 days later.

This is an autobiography about a Chinese girl who lived in a period when girls were regarded as a burden by poor families and were sold off at a young age to help pay off debtors. Janet displayed amazing resilience and courage and triumphed over situations -- child slavery and the Japanese occupation, to become a nurse and later a matron at Singapore's St Andrew's Mission hospital.
