Unlike his book India: A Wounded Civilization, which is a brilliant critique of the Indian ethos, Among the believers turns out to be a disappointment. I was expecting some of Naipaul's keen observations but it turned out to be mostly a travelogue and mostly trivial observations. Overall the book is a good read, with some historical perspective on Islam and a good account of the trials and tribulations of being a modern muslim.
Naipaul would do himself justice to just stick to writing ficiton. Carrying his fictional tendencies in this travelogue is just too much..
