“As a person who doesn't enjoy the Fantasy genre (or the Young Adult one), I would probably never have picked up this book on my own. As it happened, though, I was cooped up in an apartment in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country and a woman lent me all of the English-language books she owned. This was one of them.
I absolutely adored this book. Adams creates an entire mythology for these rabbits, a culture with folkways and history; the panic and determination which take hold when their way of life is threatened is utterly palpable.
I sense that Adams intended for this to be an allegory for human struggle, or possibly even a call to environmental awareness. It works on these levels, but I suggest suspending disbelief and throwing yourself wholly into the world of these rabbits. There is more than enough to hold on to in these characters and their story that the novel doesn't need to represent anything more.”
