Watership Down: A Novel

Watership Down: A Novel

by Richard Adams

Watership Down has been a staple of high-school English classes for years. Despite the fact that it's often a hard sell at first (what teenager wouldn't cringe at the thought of 400-plus pages of talking rabbits?), Richard Adams's bunny-centric epic rarely fails to win the love and respect of anyone who reads it, regardless of age. Like most great novels, Watership Down is a rich story that can... (read more)

As a person who doesn't enjoy the Fantasy genre (or the Young Adult one), I would probably never have picked up this book on my own. As it happened, though, I was cooped up in an apartment in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country and a woman lent me all of the English-language books she owned. This was one of them.

I absolutely adored this book. Adams creates an entire mythology for these rabbits, a culture with folkways and history; the panic and determination which take hold when their way of life is threatened is utterly palpable.

I sense that Adams intended for this to be an allegory for human struggle, or possibly even a call to environmental awareness. It works on these levels, but I suggest suspending disbelief and throwing yourself wholly into the world of these rabbits. There is more than enough to hold on to in these characters and their story that the novel doesn't need to represent anything more.

It's been at least 25 years since I've read this book, but I loved it then. A great allegorical fantasy with, I suppose, a huge debt to Orwell.

If you don't root for the rabbits while reading this book, and think about how awesome Hazel and Fiver are, I would seriously worry.

I was forced to read this in the seventh grade. I would never read it on my own, and, I hated it. I couldn't get into it. There was just something about it that was not appealing to me, and I am infinitely glad that I never finished it.

I hated this book...i never could get into the whole rabbit language and felt like it was too depressing and slow for me to enjoy it.

This classic fantasy can be read on many different levels; basically it's an allegory about courage and facing your own fears, and about leadership and survival. The rabbits have their own culture and language and readers will be drawn in. "Lapine" words are defined on the bottom of pages.

Okay, you might think a book about talking rabbits is weird. So did I. This book is terrific read. It's funny, action-packed and some parts are sad. I loved imagining all the parts of the book- it's very descriptive! Like most of the books on my shelf, you get attached to the characters even though they are not real. It's a great book for all ages.

Haunting, disturbing, clever. Probably deserves 5 stars but I didn't like it that much, though I respect it very much.
