There was a time where I was a little too obsessed with Herbert's work and all I read were his books. Ultimately, I have read the entire original Dune series three times through. What was initially so compelling to me about this book was the...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It2 of 5 members found this review helpful“Kind of dry. I liked the concepts when I was younger, and I liked it once, but overall I want to call it a roller coaster book. I mean roller coaster meaning it has a few ups, and many points where it just drops. Slow read, and possibly overrated.” see full review » see other reviews » |

For one, the movie and the mini-series looked way too nerdy to me... and I'm quite proud of having nerdy interests, so that's certainly saying something. So in all honestly, I expected not to like this book very much until I read the first chapter. Some parts blew me away, while others gripped me with suspense (particularly the first encounter with a sandworm). The complexity of it all—its many characters, its deep politics, its unique ideas—could explode one's head if handled by a lesser writer, but Herbert does a very good job of keeping things organized and, more importantly, entertaining.
And maybe it's just my imagination, but I saw a ton of what I thought were hidden messages. Whether this was Herbert's intention or not, it worked for me.”

Dune is easy to read despite its number of pages (more than 500) has a great storyline full of very believable characters that keep you turning the pages, a sci-fi thrill-ride that won't disappoint. The film was equally fantastic, a must-read for anyone who calls themselves a serious fan of the genre.”

He said since I liked Eragon I should read this book, and I did. It's a great read, but the rest I really get lost in. Oh well, I was never one for all that sci-fi business.”
