Science Fiction 1224 books / 3996 members / 3207 posts Science fiction includes such a wide range of themes and sub-genres that it is notoriously difficult to define. This is a list of definitions that have been offered by authors, editors, critics and fans over the years since science fiction became clearly separate from other genres. Definitions of related terms such as "science fantasy", "speculative fiction", and "fabulation" are included where they are intended as definitions of aspects of science fiction or because they illuminate related definitions — see e.g. Robert Scholes's definitions of "fabulation" and "structural fabulation" below. Some definitions of sub-types of science fiction are included, too; for example see David Ketterer's definition of "philosophically oriented science fiction". In addition, some definitions are included that define, for example, a science fiction story, rather than science fiction itself, since these also illuminate an underlying definition of science fiction.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls, contains an extensive discussion of the problem of definition, under the heading "Definitions of SF". The authors regard Darko Suvin's definition as having been most useful in catalysing academic debate, though they consider disagreements to be inevitable as science fiction is not homogeneous. Suvin's cited definition, dating from 1972, is: "a literary genre whose necessary and sufficient conditions are the presence and interaction of estrangement and cognition, and whose main formal device is an imaginative framework alternative to the author's empirical environment." The authors of the Encyclopedia article - Brian Stableford, Clute, and Nicholls - explain that, by "cognition", Suvin refers to the seeking of rational understanding, while his concept of estrangement is similar to the idea of alienation developed by Bertolt Brecht, that is, a means of making the subject matter recognizable while also seeming unfamiliar.

SHORT Stories 342 books / 515 members / 237 posts I love short stories! While a great novel can move me into different worlds, times, places, I find that I can have these same compelling and entrancing experiences with short stories. And short stories cover all the genres of literature - what a tasty buffet from which to sample!

I have found that sometimes it is difficult to discover or even find short stories however. Sometimes disdained and so often misunderstood... Rarely cataloged as such, often not shelved in their own neighborhood, what's a person to do to find them! I am generally left with that old pal serendipity to lead to me new authors.

Some of my favorite authors: Edward P. Jones, Carol Shields, Alice Munro, Charles Baxter, Dan Chaon, Antonya Nelson, Tim Gatreaux, James Lee Burke, Jhumpa Lahiri, Richard Russo, Ellen Gilchrist, Robert Boswell, Ursala Hegi, Margaret Atwood, and many others.
And as you probably already noticed, many of these names, along with a wealth of other authors, are often perceived as "novelists" and we don't ever think to see if they too, are writers of short stories! Look at the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, Orange Prize, Giller Prize, Booker Prize (and other) winners and you will notice that many of them are wonderful tellers of tales of a shorter nature:-)

So if you are a short story kindred spirit please join us and share your favorites, what makes it a favorite, and anything else you want to say about these gems.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!

It looms over my days,
It haunts my nights,
The further I try to go,
It is again before my eyes.

The sweat trickling down,
My heart beating fast,
It always makes me feel,
This breath is my last.

Like an eight-legged octopus,
It entraps and engulfs me,
The more I shrink back,
Clearly the shadow I see.

My senses seem to give away,
When it comes very near,
And then I realize that
The ghostly figure is fear.
.

... Few words to describe my take on how we as human beings feel against the vast cosmic and extraterrestial forces that are so beyond our reach and comprehension... The books in this section are an attempt to unviel the truth that lies beyond ... and curb are fear of the unknown..with a spirit of scientific enquiry..

Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics 1719 books / 2113 members / 2682 posts I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a great way to discuss likes and dislikes about these books.

Just a warning, I will also put realistic-fiction books on the group shelf if I feel that they are as good as a fantasy or sci-fi book. MEOW!!!!!

***NOTICE***
If you are a member, or just a random person, please put any sci-fi or fantasy book that you *LOVE* on the group shelf, please!

Another thing, plez post discussions or reply to one, i'd love to hear your opinions.

Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say 33 books / 11 members / 15 posts The first Nuestra Palabra showcase was held in April of 1998 in the party hall of Chapultepec Restaurant. Last year, we attracted over 30,000 people to our 2004 Third Annual Houston Latino Book and Family Festival, which takes place in the Fall. This is now the largest book fair in all of Texas. In only six years, we have gone from the party hall of Chapultepec Restaurant, to exhibit Hall A of The George R. Brown Convention Center. And we are still growing. Nuestra Palabra takes the upper echelon of Latino literature into the deepest part of the community. Our endeavors stem from our main showcases, which take place monthly from February to July. The showcases highlight Latino writers in an entertaining and informative forum. We generally draw from 100 – 300 people per event. These showcases are more than simply readings. Each forum evolves from or leads to other ways to educate and inspire the community, and at the same time promotes Latino literature and Latino authors. In 2000 we added the NP TV show which now broadcasts on Houston Community College Television on Channel 19 of the Warner system. The TV Show is currently in hiatus as we update the format. In 2001 we added the Nuestra Palabra radio show, “Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say: On The Air” every Tuesday night at 7:30 P.M. on 90.1 FM KPFT, nation-wide on www.kpft.org. In 2002, Nuestra Palabra brought the Edward James Olmos Latino Book and Family Festival to Houston, which has become an annual event. Houston has been the most successful city on the book fair’s circuit of 6 cities. And we are still growing!

This is the place to come to discuss all genres of movies, old or new, viewed on the big screen or the little one, and not necessarily book-related...

All movie-lovers welcome to join discussions, or create your own.
Feel free to resurrect old (or ancient) discussions if you have something to add!

Books You Can Not Live Without 78 books / 28 members / 30 posts What are the books that you can not live without? What are the books that you read and then read again, to the point that you have to buy another copy? What are the much loved titles that would be with you on a deserted island? Well, as a book addict, I've given this much thought. I've even created a traveling library of books that go with me where I go. So, I've created this group for all my fellow bibliophiles. The shelf is for these much loved titles, regardless of genre. Although, since I love romance, it will probably have a romantic slant. Please feel free to add your favorites and to discuss why you love them!

Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Marquez, Morrison, Joyce, Faulkner, Cather, Kingsolver and a few hundred other really delicious writers, not to impress strangers, but because they love a good read, then please join us.

We are not a private group, but the administrators will not resist the urge to delete boring and stupid comments. By the same token, personal attacks on young, slow or otherwise disadvantaged players will not be tolerated.

Generally, be nice to other members, but spare not public figures, pop lit superstars, big box stores, politicians and religious leaders. Focus more energy on what is good and even what is great, but feel free to throw a stone when the occasion calls for it.

To steal a phrase: we want to have serious intellectual discussions, but at the same time we want the heat to generate light, not fire....

Welcome!
