“I, like Jon below, loved the first book but could not get more that a few pages through the second book. I have no idea why, since I've read Dune about 4 times over the last few years. I am considering repurchasing it through my Kindle since my paperback copy is (barely) being held together by copious amounts of cellophane tape.”
“I tried this but found the writing so annoying I gave up. Why doesn't Frank Herbert use conjunctions?! It makes the whole thing feel sanctimonious and it's so distracting.Or, as Frank Herbert might say, "I tried this, found it annoying, gave up. Fr'Ankh used no conjunctions. The book, sanctimonious, distracting, unread."”
“I love this and the first two sequels. Truely epic stuff.”
“This is my favorite book of all time. I read it as a kid (12 or something) and did not get very far into it, but picked it up again in college and have to say that I cannot get enough of Dune.”
“I wanted to read this book for a long time, and I have to say I was a bit disappointed - I found the dialogue particularly to be a bit hokey, but I could see how one could fall in love the detail of the worlds created in this book. Obviously extremely creative - just found the dialogue a bit disappointing and so the book dragged on much more than I was expecting.”
“First let me say I read the first book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I started the second book, and just couldn't get into it. Aside from being an enjoyable work of fiction, which Dune very much is in my opinion. It is also an intriguing observation into islam. Much of the concept of this book is a loose and off planet interpretation of islamic prophecy. Then there is the issue of the spice. Compare if you will the spice to petroleum. They both: come from the dessert, are necessary for travel and thereby commerce of all kinds, are exceedingly valuable, ... That is only the tip of the iceberg, and I'd like to say a lot more. However, given that many readers may be sensitive to the comparisons drawn in the novel, I'll simply invite anyone not offended by the topic to discuss it with me further by sending me a note.”
“So many books, so little time - so I rarely reread a book. I have read this one three times and am looking forward to the third.”
“Has anyone read the House books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson? They are very well done and closely mirror Frank Herbert's style. That is who released the final two books of the original series (from the found manuscript) and there is another book forthcoming -- Paul of Dune.”
“If you don't know, Frank Herberts lost manuscript was found in a safe deposit box by his son Brian a few years ago and it is now availible in 2 books, so if you read the series but have been dying to find out who those two old people with a net are you can finally find out! I'd have waited another 15 years for it, not many write like Frank anymore.”
“Somebody here said that the sequels aren't that good...I found The God Emperor of Dune the best of them all.”
