This book is very, very jumpy– making it fairly hard to comprehend. The story is incredibly scattered and the language is fragmented. If you've never read Kerouac before, I do not recommend this as the first work of his you read.

Read it when I was reading everything Kerouac. Loved it at the time. I doubt it holds up.

I always said if Jamaica had a taste or a smell, it would be spiced rum. When you read this book you can taste and smell the words Kerouac writes.

It's been too many years for me to adequately rate this novel. It's the only Kerouac novel I've read.

This was the story of Leo's love for Mardou and how he lost her love with his constant drinking and abusing her love like she would never leave him. It takes place in the 50's and was written over the period of three days and nights. I thought this was an amazing book. The way Jack Kerouac describes the events makes the reader feel almost as if they are experiencing the same thing. It has made me want to read more books by this author and i would strongly recommend it.

crazy ole love story told in a single book long sentence... i exaggerate of course, there are some periods in there, its more than one sentence! but it is classic kerouak flow & a great lil tale of heartache... this book achieves a sweet rhythm that makes it groove & glide along...

My second favorite Kerouac book, the first being Desolation Angels. Read it at the perfect moment. Wonderful honesty.
