My favorite Kerouac novel. Yes, even over On The Road. It might partly be because it takes place in San Francisco, my hometown, but this book took me away. I love the prose style.

My incredible introduction to Jack Kerouac. A marvelous novel of the highest poetic caliper. This is a fictional biography in that the characters and situations are real, but names and times have been changed to protect the guilty. Kerouac, along with Cassidy, Ginsberg and Burroughs, was the start of the Beat Generation and brought a new way of thinking to the world.

Beautifully written and poignant, the drearily sad struggle between isolation, the need and hatred of it, and life. Points of this are funny, points are horrifying, but mostly it's sad. Perfect read for anyone who likes to read other's introspection (whether they agree with it or not.)
