“You've gotta hate when you read a book and feel like you're missing a chunk of very key information.
When I first picked up this book I was excited. Series make me excited, they generally make for delicious reading with shiny plots. Even with series that wrap up with each book (i.e. Kitty Norville series) the characters are usually a good read an watching them get into various shenanigans are amusing. So when I started this book I was really disappointed.
I know it's the first book of the series, it says so on the front cover and yet I was re-reading trying to figure out what I'd missed and how I'd missed it. That made the beginning hard to get into as I was constantly distracted with trying to figure out what Keira was. It was written like I should know but I didn't. So many facts about her and her heritage were vague and patchy. I never found myself getting pulled into her world. Never grasped the world Lima was trying to create.
The plot about her visions and various murders weren't gripping. Keira as a character fell flat and I never felt like I was beginning to get to know her. I wanted to know her and this backwater town she lived in but I couldn't. I wasn't offered anything meaty to sink my teeth into. Lima did, however, incorporate themes that should've worked, unfortunately they never clicked. It was almost as though they were added simply because this genre usually demands it.
I feel like I should give book two a try because first books aren't always perfectly developed but it'll take some time before I reach for book two.
