The book is supposed to be about a supposed discussion b/t Freud & C.S. Lewis, but the author obviously sides w/ Lewis. It also looked at the way the men lived their lives (did they live according to their own writings). I got the feeling that the author, who teachers a course at Harvard based on these two men’s world view, started teaching the course as an atheist and is now a believer. Overall, the book was dense at times, but a good read. ”

The "debates" set up between Freud and C.S. Lewis seem to always end up having Freud put forth his position and then C.S. Lewis demolishing it. It is really not a challenging book to christians and I would imagine atheists would be irratated by the plainess of Freuds arguments and the heavyweight Lewis demolishing it. Essays of Bertrand Russell vs. Lewis would be much more entertaining and a more fair fight. ”

It is interesting how people can fall into categories of haveing optimistic ,positive view of life and on the other hand developing dark, pessimistic view of life emerging from belief and unbelief. ”

Not that it was difficult to read--it is not. It's a great idea--an evidence-debate between two extremely significant thinkers of the twentieth century. And very interesting to be able to read encapsulations of each one's views in different areas. I do suspect Nicholi of bias, but whenever I tried to look for it objectively I wasn't so sure, so given that we're all human and all have a position, I think he did a good job of presenting both sides. The only negative for me, in the end, is that the book is simply what it is. I expected such an exciting idea to be greater than the sum of its parts, and I'm left, in general, with simply an appreciation of the parts. Definitely worth reading at least once. The PBS special is also worth catching--more dynamic, involving more voices. ”

Lewis, but the author obviously sides w/ Lewis. Don't get me wrong - I side w/ Lewis as well, but if a person is to write a book about 2 people like that, he should stay neutral. Instead, he makes Freud sound very ignorant & uninformed. I was expecting something more leveled.”
