This is one of the best books I've ever read. I read a lot, so I don't say this lightly.
A true story that grabs you by the heart and head and doesn't let go until well after you've finished it.

It is exciting, thrilling, fascinating, frightening and saddening. It is difficult to believe that human beings can survive all that the subjects of this book survived. A group of sailors who survived the sinking of their ship on the coast of Africa make it to land where they are almost instantly grabbed, threatened and kidnapped by savage desert-dwelling natives and are made into slaves.

This story and a book about it was actually one of Abraham Lincoln's favorites and I can understand why. Do yourself a favor, and read it. You'll never forget it.

An incredible story of survival in what amounts to the more hopeless of circumstances. The account draws the reader in to the horrors and overwhelming brutality of the Sahara desert, the starvation and dehydration, and the almost certain outcome of death as these shipwrecked sailors are traded in slavery. An essential read.

This true tale of suvival after a shipwreck of the coast of Africa in 1815 is totally absorbing - read it in a couple of days and felt guilty having food and beverages while I was doing so!

A gripping survival story based on actual historical events from the early 1800s. Great descriptions of desert survival, slavery and intrigue with plenty of cultural background information. Especially relevant in light of today's complicated struggles in Africa and the Middle East.

Very glad that I read Sufferings in Africa first, great to go through the actual, researched events that happened in original story.
