I liked Wilde's style: at the beginning there is the socialite and cynic who fights life with irony; further on the hopeless tragedy of human nature, the more tragic for being beyond redemption. And as the soberness of the subject grew on me it inflicted the understanding that a minor inner weakness can grow into a major failure - there are no second chances.

is the title 'picture' of dorian grey acurate? because i have read the very good translation in my own language, greek, where the title goes: 'the portrait of dorian grey' which i think is much much better..
as for the question our friend mossflower asks here, i believe he didn't catch the essence of the book at all. it is not the eternal youth that is the point really here..sandy b groovy gives a better answer..i would say it's the vanity of the human being, it's what is essential and what is not in one's life and what you are ready to give up to catch up something that presents itself as beauty to you and later you understand that you lost all that really matters for something of no value at all..that this that for one moment can bring pleasure and acceptance, maybe at the end of the day you will find out that it was ugly and immoral and that you should have searched better to find out a better dream, a better ideal..and not only something that serves you and your vanity..you find yourself alone and in sorrow and pain, but if you had chosen another way maybe you wouldn't be so glamorous but maybe you'd have gained a full soul..eh?

I disagree with mossflower. I don't think the book is about eternal youth, it is about the sins made to get what you want and how ugly evil actually looks.

Very different from the other novels which I have read previously. I felt very strange about the feelings of the characters involved in it, in the starting. Later I had to go through some study guides to get the context. The ready wit of the author makes it much more enjoyable reading. Liked it

Because of his wit, Wilde is on my list of ... "People I want with me, if I'm stranded on an island".
