This was one of my favorite books as a child. It captured my imagination--I had my mom make me a spy belt like Harriet's. My grandmother had a dumbwaiter in her house, but I never had the guts to ride in it as Harriet does.

I wanted to like this one more than I did, but I just couldn't get into it. I COULD NOT reconcile the fact that Ole Golly was gone for good only a third of the way into the book. She was my favorite character, and once she left I sort of just wished the story would hurry up and finish.

I think I love this book more with each re-reading. As a child, I just thought it was cool that she had a notebook and wrote lots of stuff. On my first re-reading I thought, "oh, she learns how to treat her friends" but on this 2nd re-reading, the whole thing seemed much deeper and richer. It is about the impulse to write, to collect all of one's impressions and process thoughts on paper. It is about writing truth, and finding the balance between truth and kindness. It is also just a really good coming-of-age story as Harriet grows and learns to be independent, and to accept all the different kinds of people and lives around her.

Good story. A somewhat weak ending but for the most part an accurate picture of preadolescent kids.

Great book, the beginning is kind of boring, but it really starts picking up after that. I loved some of the events, and Harriet herself.

I see why kids like this, but I don't care for it. I like the idea, but Harriet bothers me.

This book is one of my favorites because Harriet's not afraid to be herself, even if she's a little weird!!!
