  “I wanted so much to like this book. I did not finish reading it. Too many characters and names. It's like studying for a porn exam, where I need to know who was doing who. Sigh.”

Though I didn't have the vocabulary to describe the book then, I was aware of what I now recognize as the author's self-loathing, which he then projected outward. How else to explain a character getting high and then killed by a Studio 54-like retracting pole on a disco floor?”
