I loved Alan and Naomi. It wasn't fluffy, it was serious, but I thought it was incredible and it is a book I have never forgotten.
I tried teaching it too my 6th grade class and I didn't get a great responce. I'm not sure if I was off on the age of my audience, or it just made them all so uncomfortable. One girl loved it though and that makes me soooo happy! ”
“beautiful and so painfull”

Alan feels his social standing is rather precarious. He has one friend, Shaun, but Alan worries about losing him. As a good student, Alan worries constantly that he will be thought a sissy. So Alan is not pleased when his folks and the neighbors ask him to spend time with Naomi, a French girl deeply scarred by the murder of her father by the Nazis. Alan successfully talks Naomi back into the real world, and he soon becomes close to her. He nearly loses Shaun’s friendship, not because of Naomi, but out of his own lack of trust. When Alan fights Joe Condello for insulting Naomi, however, Shaun rescues Alan. Joe’s threats and the violence that follows terrify Naomi, and she retreats back into madness. Alan’s father offers optimism, but Alan is convinced that Hitler has destroyed the intelligent and lovable Naomi he once knew..
Alan and Shaun often seem younger than the age they must be to be in junior high, but the tragedy in Alan and Naomi makes it more appropriate reading for students at least that age. Generally the boys seem very tame for their reputation. Shaun does at the height of his anger call Alan an S.O.B., which could offend a parent or two. However, at 192 easy-to- read pages, this will fill a need for SHORT fiction on the Holocaust. SW (1977, 192 pages)

“This book is about a boy who befriends a girl in his apartment building. The girl has just come from Europe, escaping Nazis. She is disturbed and begins to come otu of her shell. It is also about her friendship and Alan growning up as he deals with the reality of the horrors that Naomi has been through.”
