Felix loves baseball. His father is a famous player in Cuba who risked everything to send his wife and infant son to America for a better life. Felix pins his hopes on meeting his dad someday and getting to know him better because his mother won't tell him much. Felix attends his first minor league game but his good time is ruined by his babysitter and her friends. Angrily he ditches the babysitter and sneaks into the locker room where the visiting team mistakes him for the new batboy. He doesn't deny it as this is his opportunity to find out if the Dominican player knows his dad. He stows away on the team bus and the next day happily but cautiously serves as the batboy until his guise is uncovered by a reporter and the team manager. Felix's mother arrives and tells him the whole story of their escape from Cuba and his father will never come to Florida. An entertaining package of sport, history and mystery; Felix is a likable and real character.

This is a 2008-2009 ICC nominee.
    It's a quick read that I'd recommend for grades 3- 7.
Felix lives alone with his mom in Florida, loves baseball and often wonders about his father who's a famous Cuban baseball player and is still in Cuba. His mom is hardly ever around, always working or at school, so Felix runs away to be "batboy" for a team with Cuban players, hoping he can uncover the mystery of his father.

The theme and setting of the story are significant. In these busy times, some kids may feel like they're put on the back burner in their parents' lives. Kids like to know about their parents lives, too. Many boys will be attracted to the baseball theme, as well. The setting is signficant to the story because of the proximity of Cuba to Florida.

The use of baseball terminology and Hispanic phrases are effective in the book. I think baseball fans and Hispanics would enjoy the book because of it, and those who don't know so much about baseball or who don't speak Spanish would appreciate the glossaries in the back. Corbett also villanized the babysitter well, too--who could blame Felix for hiding from her? Having a dog in the book was very effective, too--what boy can resist a good baseball story with a loveable dog in it?
However, the story did seem to be a little too predictable. I foresaw the ending near the middle of the book--but I won't give it away for those of you who haven't read it. Overall, though, I really enjoyed this book, despite some of it's predictability.

Free Baseball by Sue Corbett is from the Iowa Children’s Choice Award list for 2008-2009. I would recommend this book for 4th through 6th grades.Felix, an 11-year-old boy escaped to America from Cuba as a baby with his mother on a boat. He loves baseball and when his mother can’t take him to a baseball game herself, he goes with a babysitter. He decides to stow away on the visitor’s team bus. He becomes the team’s batboy and lucky charm for a day, or so he thinks. Many of the events in this story revolve around the relationship between Felix and his mother who works overtime and goes to classes trying to make a better life for both of them. From Felix’s point of view, she doesn’t have any time for him. So when he stows away on the bus, he really doesn’t think he will be missed. He tells some white lies to his mother about being at a friend’s house, Felix proceeds to have the best day of his life being a batboy for the Miracles baseball team. The baseball team feels more like a family to him than his mother. This book flows. There are few major characters and the author gives a decent background for each of them. The element that I liked was when spanish was spoken by a Dominican baseball player, and Felix was able to translate. This gives the reader a chance to read and speak spanish while understanding the translation. Pages at the back of the book also provide translations. There was a surprise about Felix’s father that the reader doesn’t see coming which educates one about Communist Cuba. There is a happy ending which is a little hard to believe but the author sets it up well. I enjoyed this book and will recommend this to several students, especially boys

This book is from the Iowa Children's Choice Award list. I picked the book because of the name. The story is a about a boy who loves to play and watch baseball. Because of problems at home Felix runsaway from home after a baseball game.

This is a wonderful book. The characters are the important part of this story. Baseball is used to tell the story of Felix and his mother. The problems they have are those that many single parent families have. Felix thinks his mother dosen't care about him because she works all the time and goes to school. The way Felix interputs or feels about his mothers working and school is important in why he runs away. I think students who read this book may have a better understanding of their parent(s)working hard to make a better life.

What I didn't like about the story was the Spanish words. They may be hard for students to say, even though most of the meanings are given after. Some readers may think that they are saying the words wrong makes a difference (it doesn't). It was hard for me to find flaws in this book because I enjoyed it so much I read it in about 2and a half hours. I started reading and couldn't stop. I would recommend this book for grades 3-6.
