- Paul: Paul jumps out of high school in Washington state and boards Querencia as it departs San Diego, carrying along plenty of books from UC where he is a newly enrolled extension student. He finds his 16th birthday on the equator and a lot more!
- Metata: Polynesian shaman on Bora Bora (of sorts) who teaches John and Davey just about everything to do with living in the REAL world
- John: Skipper and sailor and philosopher... and author.
- Lauren: Paul's friend in Bora Bora and his companion in high school at Vaitape and shell diving.
