“OK, so I haven't read all the stories yet, but they are much darker than I ever thought they would be. Lamb to the Slaughter is a must read, especially if you are a woman scorned, and William and Mary is the freakiest story I have ever read. William and Mary are the names of my grandparents, which is why I read this story first, and WOW!! What a story!! Will add more as I read more.....”

He describes the setting with abundance, the sight, the smells, the texture. You then read waiting for the essence of the tale, and the twist. One knew the arrogance of the two men would trip them up. And the stake was high. I thought the daughter was going to smoke in order to confuse the bouquet. But for the servant's observation, the end would have been very different. The illustrations for this small volume that was reprinted from an earlier anthology are beautiful and enhance the delightful content.”

I love his children's books, and was pleased to find he wrote as well, if not better, for adults. I did notice that a few of the stories have a faint tinge of mysogyny, but given "Matilda", I'm willing to chalk it up to the times. And maybe he had a bad marriage or something...”

The web of situations created so skillfully and end achieved in such a routine fashion that leaves one wracking his brains for good. While some stories make you erupt into spasms of laughter, there are others which leave you bemused. Action in some of the stories is slow which make it cumbersome but anticipation of an end so stupid in itself and so obvious yet crafted in typical Dahlic fashion keep you going on.”
