I found this to be a sub-par Poirot novel. It just wasn’t a particularly compelling mystery. Only mildly entertaining, and somewhat predictable.

While vacationing M. Hercule Poirot is witness to a murder, but the victim is someone that no one would want to kill so who is the killer and more importantly why are they killing, sounds like a perfect job for M. Poirot.

Pretty standard as Christie novels go. Highly enjoyable as all her novels are.

Reading this novel made me grateful that Christie never wrote the Poirot/Miss Marple novel her publisher asked her for. It is simply too difficult to combine lead detectives. In this case, Poirot is barely in the novel, and Mr. Satterthwaite is far less charming (and penetrating) than he is in his short stories. The addition of Sir Charles Cartwright as the one driving the detecting simply confuses the chemistry further.

All of the characters involved in the mystery are very thin, and because they are described from different POV detectives (Satterthwaite, Cartwright, or Egg Lytton Gore, but never Poirot) there is little consistency in the feel. The little bit of romance is unconvincing, again due to the constant changing of POV character, and the motive Poirot eventually reveals is one that Christie has denigrated in other novels.

So all in all, while it should be read by completists like me, I would not recommend this novel to anyone else.

I listened to this read by Hugh Fraser. Mr Satterthwaite assists Poirot this time, without Mr Quin.

Its not all that interesting and i was kind of disappointed by agatha. Its not a fast pace thriller although it begins with a murder in the very beginnig. Its a story based on how guests sit down for dinner and finally one ends up dead. As usual Hercule poirot solves the mystery. Not very impressive.

An early and completely enjoyable Hercule Poriot. I picked up some of the clues and had a sense of things but I never picked the murderer. Why I had to stay up an extra half hour when my eyes were dropping is why she has 2 billion in print, as the back cover says.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was hooked from the beginning. As much as I love "Clue" I was glad that the whole story didn't take place at one dinner party, as I expected it to. I did have a guess as to who the murderer was, however I was wrong. On the right track, but I had the wrong person in mind. I was going to give the book four stars because it did get long after awhile, but the last line added the fifth.
