“Although there are all the necessary elements here, the story never comes together with any true excitement or tension and the potential for eeriness or even real mystery is undermined by turning the book into a character study of the annoying, preening, Hercules Poirot. This is made all the more intolerable by the fact that the story is told by his sycophantic "friend" whom he berates and insults at every turn, apparentlly engendering only mild resentment. Nuggets of anti-semitism and frequent remarks about women's intellectual weakness are scattered throughout the book. All of this was probably rooted in AC's sense of humor, but it comes across as the worst kind of period piece.”
