  • Mr. Entwhistle: Though retired from the legal profession, he was still ready to do a little investigating after his old friend Richard Abernethie died.
  • Miss Gilchrist: A middle-aged, fussy sort of woman, companion to Cora Lansquenet, she feared the gossip after Cora was killed.
  • Cora Lansquenet: Widow of a French painter and youngest sister of Richard Abernethie, she had an unfortunate habit of blurting out unpleasant truths.
  • Susan: Niece of Richard Abernethie, she had inherited his sharp business ability and common sense -- though not, perhaps, his innate kindness.
  • Rosamund: Niece of Richard Abernethie, she was pretty and knew it, and sought a grand career on the stage.
  • Hercule Poirot: A Belgian free-lance detective
  • Mr. Richard Abernethie: At the reading of his will, his youngest sister, Cora, blurted out the fateful words, "But he was murdered, wasn't he?" But, in the end it turns out that he has died a natural death.
  • Maude Abemethie: Wife of Richard's brother, Timothy, she was devoted to his care.
  • Helen Abernethie: Widow of Richard's brother, Leo, and Richard's favorite sister-in-law, she was a lady above suspicion.
