  • Sophia Leonides: Charles's "sweetheart", a very intelligent young woman. Daughter of Magda and Philip. She was abroad in Cairo when she met Charles.
  • Josephine: Sophia's confident little sister, twelve-year-old Josephine is a budding detective.
  • Roger Leonides: A loyal and sentimental man, Roger makes a sorry businessman and longs for the simple life.
  • Charles: The main character, and a son of a detective at Scotland Yard. He is determined to solve the mystery so that he can marry Sophia.
  • Brenda Leonides: The second wife of Aristide, she is much, much younger than him and has an interest in Lawrence.
  • Inspector Taverner: A detective at Scotland Yard.
  • Magda Leonides: The dramatic actress wife of Philip and mother of Sophia, Josephine, and Eustace, she is determined to air her plays.
