“Five stars! I thought I would be merely reading a book about people's encounters with surviving something. Well, there were stories - however, the book is really about why some people survive and others don't - even though very often those who don't are experienced in their field of pleasure. The book explains how the mind works - that there are centers for pleasure and centers of logic. Very, very often the pleasure centers rule over the logic centers - and that is when diaster occurs. The book answers the question - "Why is it that an experienced individual in the woods, gets lost and dies, whereas an eight year old child survives."”

Gonzales deftly combines factors of psychology, emotionality, spirituality, and physicality as the premier forces that determine who lives, who dies, and why.”

I spend a lot of time doing outdoor activities like the ones described in the book so I was hoping to glean some useful information and I think I did. This book seems almost like a really long magazine article - but a lot of books like this do, I guess.”

I saw so much of myself in the book. It discusses the idea of survival and survivors vs. thrivers vs. nonsurvivors. It discusses the necessitiy of a PMA (positive mental attitude) and how the application of that and various other techniques are what make you a survivor. Although this book directly correlates to survival in the wild. I applied it a lot to my survival throughout school. I saw myself a lot from times past and saw many good things that I have done and bad during high-stress situations. Since I will be starting PA school soon and it will be extremely hight paced/stress environment I will use these skills that I have learned in this book for that and for the rest of my life in all situations. I see the application of the Gospel of Jesus Christ much of that of a survivor and these ideas/techniques have helped me to be more solid in my testimony, faith and resolve to live a better more Christ centered life.”
