It was also great to get in the mind of a coach while Kobe & Shaq were clashing through the media.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Pretty good book on leadership. One thing I impressed the most is that Phil truely care for his player, even the role player on the team.”

They see a run by the other team and figure I'm the one who ought to stop it. I figure that my players are the ones who ought to stop it. Only by stewing in the mess they created can they be subjected to it's full, embarrassing outcome, and only by discovering on their own how to extricate themselves can they be adequately prepared for the next time they lose their rhythm" - Phil Jackson ”

This story highlights just how calm and grounded this coach could stay during the scandals and drama which the Laker squad went through in the 2003-2004 season. I am currently on page 102, and I find that story does a great job of explaining the path which the 2003-2004 lakers season. Being a Laker fan I find that this book does great explaining how Phil wanted to create a new dynasty and that's exactly what he did in Los Angeles. Another thing which I found interesting is that Kobe actually didn't like Jackson's way of coaching and found it boring. This came as a shock to me for I know that Kobe now sees Phil as the greatest coach ever and looks to him as an idol figure. I am curious to see how and why Kobe's feelings change and I can't wait to read the rest of the story where the Kobe scandal comes and also the 2003-2004 playoffs.
After reading this book I have gained a clear in depth understanding of why Phil Jackson is the single best basketball coach of all time. Throughout the story the author uses real life struggles in which Phil encountered on and off the court and how he would approach the problems. At the tim when Phil’s star Kobe Bryant was accused of raping a girl in a hotel room in Colorado, Phil was not surprised that Kobe was having a hard time with the press and the police. Phil had these thoughts because he had a common background of Kobe’s anger and how he has a hard time listening to those with authority. As far as it goes for the change in Phil’s tactics Phil managed to stay strong on the court and go as if nothing had changed. Another struggle in which Phil had was Kobe “hating” his new coach being Phil Jackson. When you look at the two today Kobe idolizes Phil and this book does a great job revealing the transition from hate to love. Kobe first hated Phil because he felt that Phil was abusing his power and was giving Kobe in particular a hard time, Kobe also felt that Phil’s game style was boring and didn’t give him room to shine. Later on Kobe comes to a realization that all that Phil was doing was in favor of Kobe and was fabricating Kobe to be one of the greatest players today. I was found to these two examples to be crucial because they both included Kobe who Phil has mentioned time to time that he is one of his favorite players, and I enjoy seeing how their relationship changed with time. This book really highlights how Phil is calm on the court but at the same time is able to give a sense of intimidation to some of the most intimidating players in the game. Phil is also able to grab a new team and act as if he had been coaching them for years, not only does he create winning teams but he does it the right way; with hard work and discipline. To conclude I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a big fan of basketball or to someone who is interested in coaching of sports in general. This story shows how one man could have such an effect of not only a team but a game in whole proving that anything is possible as long as you do it the right way, using patience and discipline. ”

This book is told by Phil Jackson during the tumultuous 2003-2004 Los Angeles Lakers season. It tells about Phil’s many techniques, including meditating with the team, the Triangle Offense, his relationship with Kobe and Shaq, their relationship with each other, his retirement from basketball (only for a few years), Kobe’s trial and how the Lakers did in the season. It is interesting for any Lakers fan, Kobe fan, Shaq fan, or any basketball fan. It appeals to all lovers of basketball because it not only tells about the difficulties within a team that had been coming off of 3 straight national championships, but also gives an inside look at two of the greatest players of all time in Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. Phil describes Kobe’s stubbornness to rely on other people, his incredible drive to beat everyone at everything and trouble to work as a “side kick.” This was a great debate from the time Shaq was traded in 2004 to 2009 when he won his first championship without Shaq. It is an inside look at the tension within one of the greatest duos to ever play basketball and the twilight of careers of Gary Payton and Karl Malone great careers. I recommend this book to any and all people who love basketball.”
