And how the various agencies given charge of protecting the country don't because managing the problem employs more than fixing the problem.
A major snafu saved by a deputy sheriff protecting his family and friends.”
“Good book. Not so much geekery as your usual Stephenson novel and less raw action but still a witty, engaging read.”

George is great balancing force to Stephenson and keeps him grounded in the history of the time without allowing him to get too insanely esoteric.
It is a smart novel and especially engaging for those, like me, who remembers Desert Storm as the first big, extensive news story of their life. Although events are dramatized, they are based in fact. Throughout the novel, you find that politics, diplomacy and bureacracy are as compelling as the terrorist plot.
The only detractor for me is the book takes quite a while to get going--but if you stick with it you won't regret it.”
“Enjoyed this in the same way I did Interface. The story trips along nicely to a satisfactory conclusion (I read it in one day. You don't do that with books that you enjoy) The premise feels a bit preposterous at times, but I think that was partly the point.
This lacks the info-dump of later Stephenson novels, which I surprised myself by missing just a little bit. The characters feel a bit like those from Interface, but it is hard not to sympathise for Clyde and his crying baby tied up in a biological weapon plot. In fact it was these moments of humanity in the characters that I enjoyed most.
Overall, a good read. ”
“Another early Neal Stephenson book - this one involves a national security issue that connects a strait-laced FBI agent, a midwestern agricultural university, and a smalltown sheriff who is unusally smart and competent. Although the subject is kind of serious, you can definitely hear Stephenson's distinctive voice. Especially in the sheriff character - his internal dialog is reminiscent of Waterhouse in Cryptonomicon. I thought the pieces of this story fit together better than "Interface" - a fun read. Especially if you have a background in agricultural college academia. Which I do.”
