How to write about a book of a friend of over 20 years, who started first as one of China's first 'modernists' in literature, was critisized and persecuted, after already having spent - like so many - years in remote villages during the Cultral Revolution, then went to France, which meant to be exiled and find himself in complety anonymity, to restart his literary career, published at first only in French by a tiny little press, to receive the Nobel Prize at once, in 2000, only to be critisized once again, as being 'the wrong Chinese' to win this prestiguous award.

This is Gao's autobiography, telling his complex and complicated story.
