Edgar Award-winning author Jan Burke, acclaimed for her Irene Kelly novels, hits the ground running with a harrowing thriller featuring homicide detective Frank Harriman. When the wreckage of a small plane belonging to a Las Piernas Police Department detective who disappeared a decade ago is discovered in the San Bernardino Mountains, an emotional and disturbing triple-homicide case is reopened with a vengeance. Was the pilot a sellout who murdered a key witness? Alone, following his instincts, Frank traces the path of his predecessor to uncover the truth -- and comes face-to-face with a madman whose killing intent has just taken off.

    Good, solid, contemporary police-based mystery.

Detective Frank Harriman is assigned to old case where another dectective was suspected of murder when that detective turns up as a body in a small plane that crashed 10 years before. The other dectives don't believe Frank when he believes the detective was close to finding the truth and was set up by someone in the dept. Another Jan Burke book that you can't put down until the end.

Irene's husband is working a cold case; he is the main character in this book but Irene is certainly a part of the story. There is a really bad antagonist, lots of suspense, more background info, and a compelling story. This is now my favorite of the Irene Kelly mysteries, and it isn't even labeled an Irene Kelly mystery. Please note: This story would not be as good if the reader didn't have the benefit of the books preceding it: Irene's world just gets richer with each installment. The cast of characters has grown steadily as the books have progressed, and many times appear in other books in this series later on.

A winner of a suspense. Burke writes a beautifully plotted and well-written thriller that kept me completely engaged for a nearly one-sitting read. In this book that could be read as a stand alone from Burke's regular series, we are provided with a deeper look into the psyche of Frank Harriman, Irene's (her regular protagonist)husband and a strong individualist in the Las Piernas Police Dept. He must thwart his colleagues shunning and anger as he, alone, investigates a cold case of another formerly missing, disgraced member of the force. This is in some ways a gritty, raw narrative beginning with a brutal and anguishing homicide and follow-up murders that set the stage. We see both the good and the bad side of law enforcement: the misplaced loyalty and the compromised mentality when confronted with a member different from the main group. We are also treated to seeing Irene from another perspective, seeing what has drawn these two unique individuals together, each the perfect foil for one another. An excellent, highly recommended book.
