“Good read on how computers work and the history but I probably won't actually build one... anyone out there do that?”

Not for the feint of heart though, the subject matter gets heady fast, starts off with quick chapters and a steady learning curve until chapter 14, then skyrockets towards difficult for the next 12 chapters before leveling off and finding an odd pace to finish. Definitely good, definitely worth checking out.”

It looked interesting so I picked it up and was pleasantly surprised at how incredibly cool, and informative, book is.
Check out this list of chapters:
3. Braille and Binary Codes
6. Telegraphs and Relays
7. Our Ten Digits
8. Alternatives to Ten
18. From Abaci to Chips
Did you ever wonder what those numbers and bars mean on 35mm film roll? (Do you remember film?) Ever wonder how bar codes work, and how they came about? All this and more in a good mix of historical background, application, and - yes - a good bit of math to go along with everything.
If you are a geek (said in the most loving way possible), or have a geek in the house, you really should get this book.”
“Thanks, Dad, for this wonderful addition to my library. If you want to understand code starting from something easy this is the book. It begins with the beautiful simplicity of braille and morse code and works you up the ladder from there. Edu-ca-tion-al.”

And I don't mean take a hard drive, motherboard, cpu, memory and slap them all together; I mean build it from a big pile of transistors! Learn what happens between hardware and software.”
