Characters edit see section history

  • Bobby Pendragon: The main character. He's from Second Earth.
  • Vincent "Gunny" Van Dyke: The Traveler from First Earth. Is described as African-American, and appears to be around sixty years old. Works as bell captain of the Manhattan Tower Hotel. Gunny got his nickname when he joined the army during World War I, and couldn't fire a gun no matter how hard he tried. He was told that he was a Traveler from Press two years before the book, and was shown Third Earth.
  • Vo Spader: The Traveler from Cloral, you're introduced to him in the second book.
  • Mark Dimond: Bobby's friend from Second Earth. He keeps Bobby's Traveler journals and reads them with Courtney. I can really relate to him, which is part of why I read this book
  • Max Rose: A gang member. Also known as Maxamilian Rose.
  • Saint Dane: The evil villain. Can morph into anyone he wants. Can change his body, except his eyes.
  • Patrick: The traveler from Third Earth. He is a teacher.
  • Dewey: The elevator control operator. This character is a resurgence of a character D.J. previously created for the Tower of Terror movie he directed.
  • Courtney Chetwynde: Bobby's girlfriend. She reads Bobby's Traveler journals with Mark.
  • Ms. Jane Jansen: In this book, Bobby has had to get a bit creative about sending the journals to Mark.
  • Andy Mitchell: A smoker. He attends Mark and Courtney's school and teases them. He has been Mark's bully for a long time.
  • Ludwig Zell: Partners with Max Rose.
  • Winn Farrow: Leader of a gang.
  • Jinx Olsen: A pilot. One of the only lady fliers at the time.
  • Esther Amaden: Maximillan Rose's girlfriend.
  • Mr. Caplesmith: The owner of the hotel.
  • Buck Rogers: Max Rose calls Bobby this, and Spader has no idea what it means.
  • Maximilian Rose: Same as Max Rose.
  • Dani Schmidt: A scientist during World War Two.
  • Flash: Max Rose calls Spader this.

  • A nightmare is an exercise of the mind. It digs up your deepest fears and throws them in your face with only one purpose—to terrify. You can’t control a nightmare. The ghastly images come at you like a raging storm. The best you can do is ride it out and hope it will end. And it does end. When you wake up, you know that as real as the frightening experience may have seemed, it existed only in your mind.
