It's hard to make characters meaningfull in short stories - but she excelled at it!” see full review » see other reviews » |
“This book gives some history to the Blood Jewels trilogy and fills you in on at least one story that is missing from the trilogy, as well as lets you know what happens afterwards. ”

The Prince of Ebon Rih tells how Lucivar met and married a simple hearth witch. Zuulaman is a story of Saetan's comparative youth and shows us just what being a Black-Jeweled Warlord Prince really means, as well as the depth of the diabolical evil that was Hekatah. The last story, Kaeleer's Heart, discloses the outcome following the healing of Jaenelle after barely surviving the horrendous backlash of power that wiped the taint of Hekatah and Dorothea from two Realms.”

Usually I don't bother with short stories because I don't find them satisfying, but two of the stories in this book are more in depth explanations of things that happened in the Black Jewels Trilogy, things that I wanted to understand better, and was frustrated when Anne Bishop mentioned them only in passing. One of them is Lucivar's love story, and how he came to marry a lighter jeweled hearth witch. At 215 pages, it is closer to a novel than a short story, and very satisfying. The other story, 174 pages, is about Janelle and Daemon and their challenges as she tries to heal after cleansing the Blood of Hekata and Dorothea's taint. It was great to read about them again and get more of a happy ending than Queen of Darkness provided. The other two stories are much shorter, but are definitely worth the read, since they provide some wonderful explanations.”

The characters are engaging and feel real, the plot and flow is enthralling and filled with twists and turns. There is such a down-to-earth feel in this fantasy world.”

Kept my interest for the entire 4 hour flight. Some of her plot devices are hackneyed in the extreme but I was willing to go along for the ride”

I feel that sometimes Anne Bishop puts so much information in her books that is hard to understand. Or you’ll be two hundred pages in and come to the realization that nothing has happened yet. In Dreams Made Flesh there were only short stories and these stories relied on the readers understanding of the previous books so that the story was an actual story instead of just background. ”

Loved revisiting everyone. I was a little worried it would be hard to get back into the world, but it wasn't--this was much easier reading, except for the short bit about Saetan, and, perversely, I missed being slightly confused. Still, I love these characters, love the world, and really did not want to put this down, did not want it to end.”

Do not expect a level of storytelling on par with the novels, however.”
