Karigan G'ladheon finally accepts her position as a Green Rider, and gives up her duties to her merchant clan. After returning to Sacor City, she discovers that a new magic is rising in the Blackveil Forest, and coming to Sacoridia through a breach in the D'Yer Wall. Aside from causing erractic mishaps to land and people, this magic is affecting the Riders' individual gifts, which leads Laren Mapstone into confinement, and leaves the inexperienced Karigan and Mara in charge of the Green Riders. Karigan, meanwhile, is discovering new depths to her gift, leading her to visions of the First Rider, Lil Ambriodhe, from whom she gained her brooch, and even a little time traveling, during which she incidentally saves the life of Lil Ambriodhe.
Karigan's friend Estral Andovian discovers the journal of Hadriax el Fex, best friend of the man who later became the dreaded Mornhaven the Black. Through reading his journal, Karigan comes to terms with Hadriax's past, and learns more about Mornhaven. She even relives the last battle between Lil and Mornhaven through her time traveling, and Hadriax's decision to betray Mornhaven to Lil and the rest of Sacoridia. Karigan later discovers that Hadriax changed his name to Galadheon, which translates to the Betrayer, and went to live in peace among the fishermen -- Hadriax was, in fact, her own ancestor.
While Karigan is deeply involved in puzzling out the mysteries of her gift, which she has little control over, her fellow Green Riders are doing their best to halt the disturbing magic throughout Sacoridia. Alton and comrades are busy at work on mending the breach in the D'Yer Wall, but meet little success. After Karigan finally gains some measure of control over her gift, she risks everything to transport Mornhaven some unknown time into the future in order to buy the Green Riders a little time in which to prepare for him to rise again. Unfortunately, Karigan has no idea how far forward Mornhaven is, so the Green Riders are working blind -- and the adventure continues.
