Karigan G'ladheon is expelled from her school at Selium after she defeats a nobleman's son in a practice duel.

On her way home, she meets F'ryan Cobblebay, a Green Rider, in the Green Cloak Forest. He is dying, with two arrows protruding from his back, and he begs her to carry his message to the King of Sacoridia.
Karigan rides to Sacor City on F'ryan's horse, with many adventures along the way. She meets the eccentric Berry sisters, bandits, Eletians, and even two former Weapons. Once she reaches Sacor City, she delivers F'ryan's two letters, one to the King and one to F'ryan's lover, Lady Estora. The letter to the King contains no useful information, but it is found that the letter to Lady Estora contains information of a plot by Prince Amilton to kill his brother, King Zachary. Shawdell, an Eletian Prince who has gained the trust of the court, is revealed to be instigator of the plot, and Karigan and Zachary must use their wits to defeat him.
