The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick)

The Dip: What Winners Know About Quitting

by Seth Godin

The old saying is wrong—winners do quit, and quitters do win.

Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point—really hard, and not much fun at all.

And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you’re in a Dip—a temporary setback that will get better if... (read more)

This book was incredibly disappointing. I've been in the queue at the library to read this book for almost a month, and it is regularly mentioned on 43folders, Zen Habits, etc. The anticipation was high as I finally got this book. I was really interested in the book's premise, which is deciding when to quit and when to push forward on projects. This is a common problem I have. The book, however, didn't help me a bit in terms of defining when a "dip" has occurred or logical steps to evaluate whether to push forward or not. There is little scientific or example based research to back the author's basic premise that you have to be superstar at things so quit if you can't absolutely succeed in a task. I'm not even sure after reading the book that the author completely believed his own premise, offering conflicting "advice" in the limited text of this book. I didn't learn when the "dip" occurs, or when to quit or stick. Bummer.

This was exactly what I needed to read. I was feeling burned out in many areas of my life and wondering what I needed to stick with and what I needed to give up. This book took me step by step through the process of thinking it out. I am still at my job and have a renewed passion for it. I got through the dip!

In a smart and small package, Godin's The Dip lays out everything you need to understand about dips: how to identify the times that it's best to quit and move on and the ways to recognize when, if you just stick it out, you can become the best in the world.

Powerful stuff. But Godin's work always is.

In this book the author tells us when to stop or not with the things we're doing, how we can survive a dip and become the best of the world...

What shall I say about this book.... (long pause...)
I'm done with all those American so called 'be-the-best-of-the-world'-books. The only thing that the authors of these books can write about is being the best, the first and the top in everything, otherwise you're a loser... Well, I'm in the middle and I feel perfectly fine, thank you very much.
It's amazing how an author can fill a book with in every chapter the same thing over and over again... Luckily it was only a small book, so it didn't take more then an hour of my precious readingtime to finish it.

    Read for TittM: Leadership

I feel like this whole book could have been summed up in one sentence, but somehow was extended out to 100 pages or so. "Quit dead end projects if you want to make progress."

Sometimes I think Seth Godin is pulling my chain with all this oversimplifying. It's a very reassuring book after you quit something. For people who read it before they quit- you might just find it more confusing.
