  • Tom Wallace: Worker in a factory, husband of Anne, father of Richard. His wife is expecting when they move into the rented house.
  • Frank Wanamaker: Nieghbor who carpools with Tom to work. Husband of Elizabeth who is expecting their first child after 7 years. Blustery and full of alchohol, Frank does not seem to be as happy to have a child as his wife.
  • Anne: Tom's wife, Richard's mother, expecting a new child and fearing for her husband.
  • Philip: Tom's brother in law who is going to college in Berkley to become a shrink. He is the one who hypnotises Tom at a party for laughs and exits stage left.
  • Elizabeth: Frank's wife. Quiet and pregnant, and seemingly timid.
  • Dorothy: Junior high age baby sitter
  • Richard: Toms infant son.
